Radio Prowess - JW Winslow of WinslowArt

Chippie de Munk's Great Inventor's Contest

It's so exciting! The Monterey County Fair is planning a Chippie de Munk Great Inventor's Contest for the Fair this year. Kids in grades K-12 will get to participate in a wide array of categories - and there will be innovation categories in all of the Fair exhibits, too.

What would Jo Mora say to this? I think he'd be delighted!

Atlantic Magazine-March 2010- "Management Secrets of the Grateful Dead"

I spent over 7 years helping to produce, publicize and market award-winning management training films in the late 70's and early 80's. We studied Japanese management strategy techniques, the One Minute Manager, Maslow, Carl Rogers, and many others and produced very interesting films. While I was there, I pursued and obtained an MBA degree in management and marketing. Loved it all! 

Prior to taking on this job, I had graduated from UC Berkeley and USC. When I arrived at UC Berkeley, Jerry Garcia was frequently performing a 1/2 block away at the Keystone and his band was playing frequently at Winterland. Everyone I knew at Cal went to their shows and were impressed with their talent and songs. It was a musical phenomenon and I saw a group of fans that I had never experienced before with other musical artists. Obviously, the people on their "bus" grew into millions of people and multi-generations. The band still continues performing and Phil Lesh will turn 70 next month.

The article in the March 2010 issue of Atlantic Magazine made me smile tonight with its title: "Management Secrets of the Grateful Dead" and discussion of the US Santa Cruz formation of a Dead Archive. Studying the Grateful Dead for management and marketing strategies??? Why not! Check it out! They have an amazing story of brand loyalty, that's for sure!

The event will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at a private, ocean view estate in the Carmel Highlands from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Attendees will be able to mingle with celebrities, PGA Tour Players, and celebrity chefs, while enjoying excellent food, wine, a silent auction, live music and more. Ten celebrity chefs will be competing to make the best clam dish. Three well known area restaurant critics, Mike Hale, Dorothy Maras, and Ray Napolitano will judge the dishes to determine the winning chef. In addition to clam dishes, the Chefs will prepare a variety of other delicious hors d'oeuvres. Celebrity Chefs include Todd Fisher, Steven Salle, Mark Huber, Jeffrey Jake, Eric Harnish, Willi Franz, Jerry Regester, David Frappiea, Paul Lee, and others. Excellent wines will be served from the evening’s host, Jocelyn Lonen Winery, and eight other stellar California wineries.

The dozens of unique silent and live auction items will include a very rare six liter bottle of 1993 Silver Oak Cabernet, numbered and signed by the winemaker, Justin Meyer, as well as many other quality and limited wines; exclusive hotel stays at the Lodge at Sonoma, Calistoga Ranch, Napa River Inn; Meadowood Napa Valley Golf Getaway; Napa Valley Golf and Wine Getaway; San Francisco 49ers five time Super Bowl Champs Autographed Full Size Authentic Helmet with 38 signatures; a 5 night stay and golf package for the US Open in Pebble Beach, and much more!

The family that will be financially supported is the Franco family. John has less than a year to live and was denied life insurance.

Every day, 500 people are diagnosed with a brain tumor. This includes Jocelyn Lonen Winery’s own founder, Lonen Clayton Curtis III, who lost his battle with brain cancer at the age of 56. His widow, Susan Curtis, is continuing their dream to share the Wine Country’s unique Golf & Grapes lifestyle with others through this benefit event.

 The first time I heard Mike Beck perform (mikebeck.com) , he played his song, "In Old California" that told the story of Jo Mora. I had handled the PR for many Jo Mora exhibits and was thrilled that he had celebrated this amazing artist! Now, a few years later, an image from Jo Mora will be the key art of the 2010 Monterey County Fair and we're holding a special Valentine's event on February 5th right at the Fairgrounds...and we couldn't resist using this image created by Jo Mora that decorated the Byrds album that was released in 1968! Coming next weekend! Great fun for the whole family ... The 11th Annual Monterey Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival!

The 11th Annual Monterey Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival and Western Art & Gear Show (www.montereycowboy.org) will be held Friday through Sunday, December 11, 12, and 13, 2009 at the Monterey Conference Center located at One Portola Plaza, in downtown Monterey, CA. This popular annual event for all ages celebrates Monterey's contribution to our western heritage with cowboy poetry, song, and a first class western art and gear show. The festival brings together people from all over the United States to enjoy and learn more about the "cowboy way of life," including its history, current values and culture.

The festival features seven outstanding shows scheduled over the three days, a Christmas Western Art & Gear Show and Sale, and Silent Auction. There is also Sunday morning Cowboy Church to benefit The Salvation Army of the Monterey Peninsula and features many of the top performers of the weekend. The special entertainment lineup will include Lacy J. Dalton, Don Edwards, Hot Club of Cowtown, Belinda Gail, Curly Musgrave, Sons of the San Joaquin, the Gillette Brothers and Dennis Gaines from Texas, Doris Daley from Canada, J Parson, Pat Richardson and his brother Jess Howard, Waddie Mitchell, Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum, J Parson, and many more.

The very special Western Art & Gear Show features over two dozen artisans that offer an array of interesting items for Christmas gifts, collectors and everyone else, including outstanding Western art, photography and books, clothing, (hats, jewelry, handmade boots, belts, purses, jackets, etc.), custom and antique saddles, Navajo blankets and jackets, and much more.
The Monterey Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival also coordinates the popular Cowboys in the Schools Program. During the school year, volunteers work with local educators to introduce the concept of Cowboy Culture and the influence of the vaquero to a diverse group of elementary school students. This "Cowboy Way of Life" program helps to teach youth self-esteem, ethics and values, writing, art, and history. Young people also participate in the "Open Mic" event during the festival weekend.

The Monterey Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival is supported by Poets & Writers, Inc. through a grant it has received from The James Irvine Foundation, the Arts Council for Monterey County with support from the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, and numerous local businesses, agencies, and festival fans.

NEW! During the holidays, Del Monte Shopping Center will offer a special convenient Free Holiday Customer Shuttle that will be available every weekend from December 12th to December 20th, and then will run everyday between December 21st and December 24th. The Holiday Customer Shuttle will start when the Del Monte Shopping Center opens until 30 minutes after the Center closes. Customers need to park their cars in Parking Level 1 to catch the shuttle. The shuttle stops at five locations around the center; the west side of the Century Theatres, and in front of Verizon Wireless, UPS Store, P.F. Chang's and Macy's Furniture (look for the green shuttle signs). ONE COAT AT A TIME AT DEL MONTE SHOPPING CENTER

Winter is fast approaching, and no one should ever go without such a basic necessity as a coat! Del Monte Shopping Center is again hosting the Girl Scouts of Monterey Bay's "One Warm Coat" community service project this holiday season. Gently used coats will be collected in front of Macy's every Saturday, through Saturday, January 9, 2009, from 11am to 3pm. All coats will be cleaned and repaired by Country Club Cleaners at Del Monte Center before being given to a local child or adult in need. Coats of all sizes are welcome, but children's sizes are needed most. Last year, the community gave about 1200 coats to the "One Warm Coat" project at Del Monte Shopping Center, and this year's goal is 2,500 coats.

One Warm Coat is a community service effort assisting in the collection of clean, reusable coats and jackets for donation to local individuals free of charge. Since its inception in 1992, One Warm Coat "Warming Communities...One Coat at a Time" has provided 150,000 coats to those in need at no cost. Molly's Revenge

A CELTIC CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION WITH MOLLY'S REVENGE, MOIRA SMILEY AND THE ROSEMARY TURCO IRISH DANCERS"

A very special "Celtic Christmas Celebration with Molly's Revenge, Moira Smiley and the Rosemary Turco Irish Dancers" will be held on Friday, December 11th at 7:30 PM at the First United Methodist Church, 915 Sunset Drive, in Pacific Grove. Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the door. The community is invited to come out and celebrate the holidays with a special evening of Celtic music, song, story and dance. Molly's Revenge will donate 15% of the profits to the First United Methodist Church, and their CD sales will also support two worthy non-profit charities.

International Celtic touring band Molly's Revenge -- whose lineup includes bagpipes, fiddle, whistles, guitar, bouzouki and mandola -- have performed nationally and internationally in Australia and China. Acclaimed vocalist Moira Smiley is an accomplished singer in many styles and has been a finalist in the All Ireland Singing Competition.

The performance will include Christmas songs both old and new from many lands, all played with a Celtic twist. The audience will be able join in and sing some of their favorite carols. The evening will also include spell-binding folk tales set in the winter season, and dancers who will surely set everyone's toes tapping.

The Molly's Revenge YuleDance CD, featuring music from the show, will be available at the concerts. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the CD will be donated to two worthy charities. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education, and patient services, and the Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation is the oldest and largest patient advocate and support organization for bone marrow diseases.

Four of the finest musicians this area has ever produced will return this weekend to perform in various venues.

That would be Mike Beck, Tom Ayres, Mike Lent and Dave Marotta.

All four are well known to local music fans, but also to music aficionados worldwide, thanks to their own recordings or playing with famous music names.

For example, Lent, who calls Pacific Grove home, was one of the top guitar players in the area (playing in the all-star Roger Eddy Band) before leaving and making his mark as the longtime guitarist for Barry Manilow, for whom he still plays.

And Marotta, of the famously musical Marotta family (does anyone NOT play an instrument in that family?), is a first-call bassist in Los Angeles who has played with the likes of Kenny Loggins, Colbie Caillat, Bruce Hornsby, Phill Collins, Burt Bacharach and David Benoit.

Marotta also performs on film soundtracks, including "What Happens In Vegas" and "Wild Hogs" and is the bassist for an all-star celebrity band, Band From TV, that features actors such as Terri Hatcher, Bonnie Somerfield, Greg Grunberg and James Denton.

Lent will be playing Friday and Saturday night starting at 7 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey's Fireplace Lounge with saxophonist Gary Meek, bassist Dennis Murphy and drummer Dave Morwood.

Verheyen's distinctive guitar playing, a furious fusion of rock, jazz and blues, can also be heard on more than 200 television shows and films.

His latest CD, which features Marotta (with whom he has played for decades) and drummer Walfredo Reyes Jr., who himself has played with Santana and Steve Winwood), "Trading 8s," features Verheyen playing with guitar aces Robben Ford, Joe Bonamassa, Steve Morse, Albert Lee, Scott Henderson and Rick Vito.

The Planet Gemini show Friday night gets going rather early at 7:30 p.m. Stay for the comedy, which features touring comic Yoursie Thomas and local comedian LG Brown.

With a combination of Beck's love for classic country (Merle, Johnny and Buck), roots rock (Dylan, Petty, Young) and Ayres love of just about anything, from blues to classic rock (especially Cream, Hendrix and the Stones), the Satellites built up a loyal following.

Beck, a working cowboy who spent years playing his trade in Montana and released a few solo cowboy singer-songwriter albums, moved back to Montana a couple of years ago, but still likes to return and get together with the band, now Mike Beck & the Bohemian Saints.

The band plays a combination of Beck originals ("John Steinbeck Drank in Here," "Oildale"), classic country and country rockers and Tom's flights of fancy, including hilarious versions of "Sand City" (sung to the tune "Kansas City") and the Monkees' "I'm a Believer" and any number of Hendrix and Cream tunes.

• The Monterey Bay Blues Festival's Battle of the Blues Bands pits 11 blues and R&B bands against each other for the right to play on the main stage at next year's blues festival.
